Every business should have a backup solution plan implemented, regardless of the size of the business in terms of employees or revenue. For most large corporations that can afford an extensive backup solution, usually the benefits of a good backup solution far outweigh the cost.
For smaller businesses, such as family-owned businesses, a backup solution may not be affordable or easy to implement. With the increase in Internet connection speeds, and the increase in online backup solutions, it seems it has become easier for any small business to implement a backup solution.
Online backup solution service providers usually provide an executable that you can install on a computer. This executable will load once the computer is started, and then runs in the background monitoring directories and files that you have chosen to backup. If any of the files have changed, then the update file is backed up online.
The best part of this is that it is affordable, and you can relax knowing that your data is protected from harm.
What about security? With security of data both online and on local computers being on many people's minds, most, if not all, online backup services encrypt your files.
To protect your data, online backup services would usually do the following:
- Your files are encrypted first on your local machine before the backup occurs.
- The files are then sent to the online backup service's server using a secure connection.
- On the server the files are then kept encrypted until they are needed.
If an online backup service provider doesn't protect your files in this manner, then you should look around because there are those that do.
The space provided by online backup solution providers can range from 100s of megabytes (MB) to gigabytes (GB). Some may even offer unlimited space for a flat fee. You will need to determine how much space you need to better understand how much you will be paying. For the most part, you shouldn't be paying more than $100 a month for online backup.
Backing up data is extremely important, especially if you run a small business. If you don't wish to manually backup all your files on a regular basis, I suggest you look into online backup and have it done for you automatically and securely.
